About the Author

Dr. Abdullah has proven that many common skin concerns can be avoided by optimizing skin health. His research has shown that the use of pharmaceutical-grade aloe vera is a beneficial tool in that effort. Thus, Dr. Abdullah travels the world educating licensed skincare professionals and consumers alike about the proper ways to utilize aloe in skincare applications, the essential steps to ensuring the skin's basic needs are met, and setting the record straight on prevalent skincare myths. Furthermore, he continues to see patients regularly at his practices in North Dakota and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

A member of the International Aloe Science Council (IASC), Dr. Abdullah has served on its board of directors. He is also a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and serves on the Ethics Committee of the North Dakota Medical Association.

Dr. Abdullah earned his medical degree from Northwestern University and completed his residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He is married to Dr. Kay Abdullah, a board-certified surgeon, with whom he has twin sons Alex and Ali.

Very informative and easy to understand

This book explains in depth the fundamentals of skin care, and the importance of Aloe Vera, as the author is a Cosmetic/Plastic surgeon and Renowned Aloe Vera researcher. And, it does not "push" any certain brand, it is written in a way that is easy to understand and teaches you the science of skin care.

Skin care does not need to be complicated. Dr Abdullah explains the basics - who knew it could be so simple? Less is more! After following his advice my skin is the best it can be. Thank you for this wonderful book on how to obtain beautiful skin.

The first three decades of the twentieth century in late-colonial Vietnam--the period that also marked the transition between the dominant Confucian and nascent Western worldviews--generated an abundance of political literature in that country. The documents from this transitional era belong to a variety of genres: propaganda pamphlets, open letters to government officials, texts for private or clandestine classrooms, manifestos of political or cultural organizations, columns from newspapers, public proclamations, petitions to international agencies, and poems. Whether from the old or the new era, however, they all expressed an opinion on the colonial status of their country.
Scholar Truong Buu Lam has collected twenty of these documents, all written between 1900 and 1931, into an anthology which captures the spirit of the conflicting ideologies and the political struggles of this time. Written originally in Vietnamese, French, or classical Chinese, the documents have been translated into English by Lam and given individual introductions in an effort to clarify their historical contexts most accurately. Lam also provides a lengthy overview of the contemporary scene at the time of the writings to further illuminate the grander themes tying the writings together.
In Vietnam, all of these writings are well-known texts, quoted in every publication that examines the period under consideration; yet, to the best of our knowledge, few have been reproduced in their entirety and none has ever been translated into English. This translation marks an important addition to the fields of Southeast Asian and colonial studies and will be welcomed by historians, political scientists, and anthropologists alike.
Truong Buu Lam is Associate Professor of History, University of Hawaii at Manoa. He is editor of the collections Patterns of Vietnamese Response to Foreign Intervention, 1858-1900 and Borrowings and Adaptations in Vietnamese Culture, and the author of Resistance, Rebellion, Revolution: Popular Movements in Vietnamese History and New Lamps for Old: The Transformation of the Vietnamese Administrative Elite.

Essential History

This volume covers the history of Viet Nam over several thousand years. Had I read this book before being assigned in Viet Nam during the war, I would have been far better equipped to do my job. The Vietnamese people have engaged in guerilla warfare over many centuries, not just ours. This fact alone should have informed our leaders as to might have been achievable goals. We went in ignorant and, unfortunately, came out the same way having learned little or nothing from the experience. The volume contains a significant amount of poetry which goes far to help the westerner understand the culture.

About the Author
Maya Angelou was raised in Stamps, Arkansas. In addition to her bestselling autobiographies, including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and The Heart of a Woman, she wrote numerous volumes of poetry, among them Phenomenal Woman, And Still I Rise, On the Pulse of Morning, and Mother. Maya Angelou died in 2014.

I've been a huge fan of Maya Angelou for decades now. I have had the great honor of having seen Maya Angelou speak twice before a live audience... She was a phenomenal speaker!!

I recently read the hardback edition of Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou. This book captured my interested due to the unique relationship between mothers and daughters and also because, I wanted to learn more about the relationship Maya Angelou had with her mother.

I thought Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou was overall a good read and would recommend this book to others. My only major complaint is that many of the life events that Maya Angelou discusses in this particular book have also been discussed in her other books. So, I only learned a few new things about her life that I didn't know before, which was disappointing to me as I wasn't expecting so much of Mom & Me & Mom to be a rehash of what I'd already read in her other books.

All mothers deserve a thank you

Expected a lot more from Ms. Angelou, but this is not "I Know Why a Caged Bird Sings." If you've read any of her other books, in "Mom" you'll come across similar passages. It's a simple tribute to her mother, written in simple declarative sentences. I got the feeling she wrote it because she felt she owed her mother a 'thank you.' All mothers deserve a thank you. It's clear that her mother's love and support enabled Ms. Angelou to share her talents with the world.

Not quite what I expected.

This is my first book by Maya Angelou. It was a quick read (one afternoon in about 3 hours) and I enjoyed the story of her relationship with her mother. Angelou's mother is a very colorful character and is what makes this book so interesting. I have only really ever just heard about Maya Angelou and it was very interesting to me to read about her life which was very different than what I thought it was. The only problem I had with the book was that I felt there were large gaps in the story- she seemed to just jump from one thing to another and I would have to re-read to figure out if she was changing subjects, or jumping to another moment in time, or what. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. I think I was expecting something a little more in depth. However, it was an enjoyable read. I will now look to read her "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" because I've been reading about how much better it is than this. Linda Muse

Really intrigued by The Mobile Life

The Mobile Life is a must read for anyone thinking about resettling into a new location, especially a foreign country. This fast read gives greats tips while telling the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton's journey and exploration of Antarctica during the early 20th century.

Lemieux and Parker point out in chapter three that, “Every individual will experience living in a foreign country differently: what is an advantage to one person may be a disadvantage for another (48). With that said, they recommend that individuals visit the
location before planning to resettle there. Resettling requires you to look at every aspect of the vision you have for your life. A move to a foreign country could potentially completely change your identity map. The activities and foods you loved in one location may not be available in your new location.

This book really made me appreciate how flexible our military families are. Moves like the ones described in the book affect all aspects of a person’s life including things like how you will get to work and what foods are and are not available to you. “The
philosophy of this book is that the knowledge, skills and attitudes of personal change management will help you gain control over how you experience the adventure of moving to live in a new country” (102). The tips throughout the book and reference
section at the end will be valuable to anyone moving across the country or abroad.

Must-read for all expats

I truly enjoyed reading The Mobile Life. I find it very comprehensive.

I have lived out of my home country for past 10 years; I left it when I was 23. My attitude at that time was so different, very adventurous, I wasn't bothered to prepare for it at all, just "went with the flow". I still feel I've been making the most of my expat's life without being aware of all those aspects Diane describes in her book. However reading it really helped me to name things I have been going through without being aware of what I've been experiencing.

Diane, in her book, takes a bit different approach to expats’ life than I had experienced being 23 when I moved out for the first time. She really prepares you to go and live abroad!

The book is a must-read for all those who are planning to move abroad for the first time, who take it seriously and who want to truly enjoy it. Regardless if you have a family who move abroad with you or you are 23 and leaving your home country for an internship or an exchange program… there is a lot in it to learn.

The book is definitely an insightful and eye-opening lecture.
I am glad I got to read it. Even after 10 years abroad, Diane shares a lot of advises I can benefit from.

About the Author

Elizabeth Campbell is Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Marshall University’s College of Education and Professional Development, USA. Before moving to academe, she worked in community development as a folklorist, writer, and museum curator.

Luke Eric Lassiter is Professor of Humanities and Anthropology and Director of Marshall University’s Graduate Humanities Program, USA. His books include The Chicago Guide to Collaborative Ethnography (2005) and Invitation to Anthropology (4th edition, 2014). In 2007, he founded the journal Collaborative Anthropologies and served as its editor or co-editor until 2013.
