Secure your Java applications against online threats by learning the powerful mechanisms of Spring Security. Presented as a cookbook full of recipes, this book covers a wide range of vulnerabilities and scenarios.

Overview

  • Learn about all the mandatory security measures for modern day applications using Spring Security
  • Investigate different approaches to application level authentication and authorization
  • Master how to mount security on applications used by developers and organizations

In Detail

Web applications are exposed to a variety of threats and vulnerabilities at the authentication, authorization, service, and domain object levels. Spring Security can help secure these applications against those threats.

Spring Security is a popular application security solution for Java applications. It is widely used to secure standalone web applications, portlets, and increasingly REST applications. It is a powerful and highly customizable authentication and access-control framework. It is the de-facto standard for securing Spring-based applications and it is currently used to secure numerous demanding environments including government agencies, military applications, and central banks.

"Spring Security 3.x Cookbook" is a repository of recipes to help you successfully secure web applications against threats and vulnerabilities at the authentication and session level layers using the Spring Security framework. We will not only explore Spring-based web applications, but also Java-based and Grails-based applications that can use Spring Security as their security framework. Apart from conventional web applications, we will also look at securing portlets, RESTful web service applications, and other non-web applications.

This book will also take you through how to integrate Spring Security with other popular web frameworks/technologies such as Vaadin, EJB, and GWT. In addition to testing and debugging the implemented security measures, this book will also delve into finer aspects of Spring Security implementation such as how it deals with concurrency, multitenancy, and customization, and we will even show you how to disable it.

This book gives you an overview of Spring Security and its implementation with various frameworks. It starts with container-based authentication before taking you on a tour of the main features of Spring Security. It demonstrates security concepts like BASIC, FORM, and DIGEST authentication and shows you how to integrate the Spring Security framework with various frameworks like JSF, struts2, Vaadin, and more.

The book also demonstrates how to utilize container managed security without JAAS. Then, we move on to setting up a struts2 application before showing you how to integrate Spring Security with other frameworks like JSF, Groovy, Wicket, GWT, and Vaadin respectively.

This book will serve as a highly practical guide and will give you confidence when it comes to applying security to your applications. It's packed with simple examples which show off each concept of Spring Security and which help you learn how it can be integrated with various frameworks.

What you will learn from this book

  • Implement Form-based, HTTP Basic, Client, and Digest authentications
  • Bring in Groovy on Grails with Form-based Spring Security
  • Integrate Spring Security with Vaadin
  • Combine Spring Security with ORM and NoSQLDB
  • Use Spring Security in Spring-Social (Facebook and Twitter)
  • Learn about Spring Security for SOAP
  • Authenticate RESTful services with Spring Security

Spring Security 3.x Cookbook Review
By John C. Gunvaldson
I received Spring Security 3.x Cookbook as an eBook from Packt Publishing about a month ago. This was fortunate as I had prior to this point been struggling implementing Spring Security into our new Spring MVC sample developer’s web application at work (ultimately to become our standard Maven Archetype for new web development).

The requirements at work insisted on Spring Security seamlessly meshing with our campus Shibboleth 2 Single Sign-On process. This is a bit like logging in without signing in – and not one of the core principles of Spring Security out of the box (generally concerned with classic Authentication via web form submission). It was therefore useful to see the information on Multiple Authentication in Chapter 11 (as I built a JPA example similar to Chapter 11 in this book).

This book (as cookbook code format) immediately helped with understanding code syntax, formatting, location and common usage. Packt commonly uses headings like (Getting Ready, How to Do It, How It Works, There’s more and See Also) – but admittingly I was searching for code fragments that were similar to my needs – so it was the code (the How to Do It paragraphs) that I appreciated/needed the most.

Also of note, many Maven related examples in the book and downloaded sample applications. Of note in the downloaded source (which may easily be the most valuable resource of this book, as the author produced an incredible amount of great code):

* Useful examples of Maven POM dependency configurations
* Nice to see hibernate configuration examples with classic persistence.xml settings (in contrast to Springs Pet Clinics XML based persistence layer API).
* DAO objects, Glassfish JDBC configuration examples.
* Nice interface and implementation services.
* Example MVC controllers using Spring Security (very useful to see worked out examples). Again, largely XML based configuration versus annotation based. At the day job, we use a ton of annotation spring security objects as we needed a lot of overriding of core spring security API.

Although some amount of examples utilize JDBC wired up with GlassFish (Chapter 7, 8, 9 and 11), and the commercial support for GlassFish has been halted by Oracle, the community version is still very active and working through these examples are largely unaffected by this issue.

Chapter 1 of the Spring Security Cookbook dives into the topic of security with Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS) - which I hadn't any experience with (typically using a framework of one type of another over the years to obtain these common services). The point I want to make here was this chapter didn't help me with the Spring Integration issues I has having – but did introduce me to some related and legacy core java services – and it was interesting reading. Having not known about these services to begin with, I admit I was a bit lost immediately and had me wondering what up, so to speak. Very interesting code in Chapter 11 examines implementing JAAS with Spring Security.

Also, in review of many of the following chapters, (Spring Security with Struts, JSF, Grails, GWT, Vaadin, Wicket) I wanted to note that my development was classic JSP, Web 3.0 servlets and Spring MVC Core services through a standard Maven Eclipse project.

Fortunately, the code fragments in the book of each of these frameworks required similar solutions to some of the problems I was having (and many were MVC based anyway) – and were useful. Even if the frameworks being discussed were not of particularly of interest to me (for my current job).

Chapter 10 – Spring Security with Spring Web Services is a technology that I will be searching for solutions in about 2 months – as we begin to implement our ESB, as securing our Web services will be a hot topic for some time (very useful to see the cxf-servlet.xml example and generated Apache CXF WSDL here).

To summarize, as there are a ton of issues I could write about (Java based configuration versus XML based configuration – both in the Spring MVC and Spring Security worlds for example), I wanted to close with an acknowledgment and recognition of the tremendous amount of work it took to build out all of the samples and code in Spring Security 3.x Cookbook – just wanted to say nice work!

Great recipe and pertinent examples for Spring Security
By Florian Lopes
First, I would like to thank Packt Publishing, for offering me this eBook.

Here is my review about this book :

It’s a great recipe of good practices, the reader can learn trough simple steps.

It's a great way to learn spring security in combination with various frameworks, especially with spring social.

I particulary appreciated the part where the author implements his own oauth access.

Additionaly, you can download examples of code, given by the author, to complete your practice.

At the end, it’s a great book to improve skills in security, and Spring Security developments.

Great book for integrating Spring Security with your web framework
By Michael Joseph Waluk
This book has an interesting approach to the cookbook theme - most recipes describe integrating the Spring Security framework with a specific web framework. If you're just starting out with Spring Security, or applying it to a new framework, this book will save you a lot of time - well worth the book's price. These include Struts 2, JSF, Grails, GWT, Vaadin, Wicket and web services (REST and SOAP).

There are also recipes on using it with Hibernate, MongoDB, JAAS, Captcha, multiple authentication providers, LDAP and Spring Social (OAuth, Facebook, Twitter). It doesn't go into extending Spring to do things like locking users out or counting invalid authentication attempts, etc. but covers basic authentication and authorization in the various use cases. There's probably room for another cookbook on extension recipes.

I found this very useful for the Spring Social recipes, but if you're securing a new project this could save you days of work.

Abelard and Heloise (Great Medieval Thinkers), by Constant J. Mews

This is a brief, accessible introduction to the lives and though of two of the most controversial personalities of the Middle Ages. Their names are familiar, but it is their "star quality" argues Mews, that has prevented them from being seen clearly in the context of 12th-century thought--the task he has set himself in this book.

Under the Wire: How the Telegraph Changed Diplomacy (Harvard Historical Studies), by David Paull Nickles

How did the telegraph, a new and revolutionary form of communication, affect diplomats, who tended to resist change? In a study based on impressive multinational research, David Paull Nickles examines the critical impact of the telegraph on the diplomacy of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Case studies in crisis diplomacy--the War of 1812, the Trent affair during the U.S. Civil War, and the famous 1917 Zimmermann telegram--introduce wide-ranging thematic discussions on the autonomy of diplomats; the effects of increased speed on decision making and public opinion; the neglected role of clerks in diplomacy; and the issues of expense, garbled text, espionage, and technophobia that initially made foreign ministries wary of telegraphy. Ultimately, the introduction of the telegraph contributed to the centralization of foreign ministries and the rising importance of signals intelligence. The faster pace of diplomatic disputes invited more emotional decisions by statesmen, while public opinion often exercised a belligerent influence on crises developing over a shorter time period.

Under the Wire offers a fascinating new perspective on the culture of diplomacy and the social history of technology.

From Publishers Weekly
Telegraphy, which conferred the ability to send messages at great speed across vast distances, "had the potential to transform diplomacy," writes Nickles, and, as a historian at the Department of State, he is well situated to explore how these transformations were received by the generally conservative corps of American diplomats. In this volume, Nickles examines three cases from diplomatic history. First, he looks at a pre-telegraphy incident, the War of 1812, and concludes, contrary to common assumptions, that telegraphy did not always deprive diplomats abroad of their autonomy. The Trent affair of 1861, when telegraphy was still relatively new, illuminates how the speed of telegraphy affected the speed of decision-making and its impact on the "aristocratic, leisurely world of diplomacy." Finally, the case of the infamous Zimmermann telegram of WWI explores, among other issues, the vulnerability of telegraphy to espionage. This fascinating but somewhat specialized study will interest primarily students of diplomatic history and of the impact of technological change on society.

From Booklist
Nickles examines the impact of the telegraph on diplomacy during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His inquiry centers on three incidents: the War of 1812, the Trent affair during the Civil War, and Britain's decoding and exploitation of the Zimmermann telegram of 1917. Nickles' narratives illustrate the way delay could either provoke or prevent a war, an option that the telegraph closed. Indeed the way the device led to centralization and fed bureaucracy annoyed the leisurely, aristocratic diplomats of late-nineteenth-century Europe, whose cultivated lassitude toward work Nickles well evokes in his anecdotes. Their snobbery elevated them above such plebian concerns as cipher security. Depicting how archaic factions resist change provides a popular hook to Nickles' study, which will strongly interest aspirants to careers in the foreign service. Gilbert Taylor

Review
In this study of the impact of telegraphy on the management of international relations, the reader is rewarded time and again by finding original observations regarding familiar events. This is a book that can have a shaping effect not only on the field of international relations but on many others, since it compels one to think hard about how changes in technology affect behavior and thought among groups with deeply rooted traditions and beliefs. (Ernest R. May, Harvard University)

David Paull Nickles has plumbed the archives of four countries to determine just how transformative [the invention of the telegraph] really was. Under the Wire is a subtle and impressive examination of history. (Christian D. Brose Wall Street Journal 2004-01-07)

Nickles offers often interesting and different interpretations of well-known events. His is a timely and readable study of how changing technology impacted the role of traditional diplomats--and the degree to which they could be controlled from Washington. (Communication Booknotes Quarterly)

In a study based on impressive multinational research, Nickles examines the critical impact of the telegraph on the diplomacy of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries…It is an interesting study by a knowledgeable author and includes an excellent discussion of the Zimmerman Telegram incident. (Cryptologia 2004-04-01)

By focusing on the telegraph, Nickles reveals the complexity of interactions between technology and human behavior...in analyzing how telegraphy transformed diplomacy, he has made a signal contribution to the literatures on communications technology and on diplomatic history. And best of all, his book is a delight to read. (Daniel Headrick Victorian Studies)

Intriguing look at various ways the telegraph affected Western diplomacy
By E. Jaksetic
In this readable and informative history book, the author (a historian at the U.S. State Department) discusses and explains how the telegraph affected diplomacy by the Western countries in a variety of ways during the period 1851-1918. Focusing primarily on diplomacy conducted by the United States, Great Britain, France, and Germany, the author contends the telegraph affected Western diplomacy in three ways: (1) changing the degree of autonomy that diplomats abroad had available to them; (2) changing the speed and pace of diplomacy, with collateral effects on the lives of diplomats; and (3) changing how foreign policy establishments operated. The author draws on a variety of sources -- books, articles, and government archives -- to support and illustrate his contentions and arguments.

The book includes extensive notes and references for scholars and students of history. But, the author writes in a style that is accessible to non-scholarly readers. Although some knowledge of modern history would be useful to better understand and appreciate the author's contentions and arguments, most readers should be able to grasp and follow the author's discussion and analysis without such knowledge. Overall, I found the book to be thoughtful, informative, and enjoyable to read.

Another book, which discusses the effects of the telegraph and radio on diplomacy and international politics during the period 1851-1945, is Daniel R. Headrick, The Invisible Weapon: Telecommunications and International Politics, 1851-1945. Readers interested in the effects of the telegraph should also consider taking a look at the following books: Tom Wheeler, Mr. Lincoln's T-Mails: How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War and Tom Standage, The Victorian Internet: The Remarkable Story of the Telegraph and the Nineteenth Century's On-line Pioneers

The Keypad that Changed History
By William Seale
This book takes the reader to a subject not easily imagined---diplomatic history pivoted
upon a technical innovation. The author is thorough and his narrative moves
swiftly. One of the best "Gee I didn't know that" books I've ever read. And it is serious history,
demonstrating how the telegraph made the wide world smaller. Wm Seale

Arms and Equipment Guide (Star Wars Roleplaying Game), by Jeff Grubb, Owen K.C. Stephens

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for having a good blaster at your side.

The galaxy is a dangerous place, and even the most capable heroes need the right equipment to get the job done. Outfitting for a rescue mission on a frigid ice planet differs from gearing up for an assault on a crime lord's jungle world headquarters. But with the right connections, and enough credits, heroes can acquire all the weapons and tools needed to survive any situation.

This sourcebook features:
• An arsenal of weapons and armor, along with rules for customizing and personalizing them.
• A wide variety of droids from across the galaxy, including the legendary R-Series astromech droids, binary load lifters, and the RA-7 "Death Star" droid.
• An array of vehicles from landspeeders to military walkers.
• Essential survival equipment, including breathers, comlinks, scanners, medpacs, and tools.

To use this sourcebook, you also need the Star Wars Roleplaying Game Revised Core Rulebook.

Guns, armor, and crunchy goodness...
By Scott Owen
This is probably the one book that players of SWRPG have been waiting for. At first glance the book seems to be a bit on the small side at only 96 pages, and in truth it is- however, the authors have managed to do a good job of cramming all kinds of fun stuff in here.
And now for a synopsis.
Chapter 1: Weapons starts off with a quick-and-easy system for customizing your character's personal weapons. No longer must a character be a Tech Specialist to build a unique weapon (although it's still true that only Tech Specialists can mastercraft). Now anyone can make certain modifications or personalizations, as long as you have a sufficient Craft skill. Examples include increased range, improved critical, reduced weight, and increased accuracy. It is also very thoughtful that most modifications are balanced with a tradeoff in some other aspect of the weapon.
There is also a small but useful section that describes the process of Concealing a weapon on your person.
The main body of this chapter describes over 50 different blaster weapons, which is more than the entire weapon list from the Core Rulebook. There are also a few Ion Guns, a handful of lethal Disruptors (think disintegrator guns), slugthrowers, dart pistols, flechette launchers, crossbows and magna casters, wrist weapons, a good-sized list of melee weapons, grenades and grenade launchers, flamethrowers, sonic weapons, and even a few species-specific weapons like the Squip Tensor Rifle and the deadly but fragile Verpine Shatter Gun. Whew!
Chapter 2: Armor also starts off with a description of how armor can be modified, just like Chapter 1. In total 17 pieces of armor and protective gear are described, from simple tracker vests and leather jerkins up to some very tasty (and very expensive) sets of power armor.
Chapter 3: Droids, as you might guess, has an extensive list of Droid types. There are a lot of droids here, almost 20 pages worth in fact, which was a bit of a surprise. The droids cover the entire spectrum from Mouse Droids and assassin droids to Astromechs and tutoring droids. There is also some additional info on playing Droid characters.
Chapter 4: Vehicles is pretty short but still manages to describe a good array of machinery, including speeders, swoops, aircars, and walkers. Like chapters 1 and 2, there are additional rules for customizing vehicles.
Chapter 5: Equipment describes dozens of pieces of miscellaneous gear. Examples include breathers, comlinks, sensors, and medical equipment. Nothing here stands out as overly powerful, but most of it seems to be useful for a character to have.
And there you have it. There's enough equipment and technology in here to keep players and GMs picking and choosing for quite some time. In that respect, the book certainly delivers. All the items seem to be well thought out and nothing appears to be game-breaking or overbalanced.
The interior of the book is in black and white, not color, but is nonetheless tastefully done and easy to look at. The buyer should be aware that only about half the items described have a picture, but I found this to be acceptable, especially where a group of items were closely alike.
I did have a few complaints. In some cases, the picture for a given weapon or Droid is not on the same page, but on a page several numbers away. This is just a tad annoying. While I like the rules for modifications, I was disappointed at the utter lack of blaster pistol attachments (0) and rifle attachments (a mere 2). There were no cybernetics, also a disappointment (although rumor is cybernetics will appear in a future book).
In addition, there is not an alphabetical index, which can cause a bit of delay in finding a specific item. Finally, I felt that the book should have been hardcover. I don't like softcovers since they are too easy to damage. I would have gladly payed the few extra bucks.
Overall, though, these were minor complaints. I was very pleased with the book and feel that it can add a great deal of depth to any campaign. The GM can now unleash a bunch of new equipment, and the players have enough options to keep them happy too.
In total I give this book an extremely strong 4 out of 5. Along with the Core Rulebook, it is definitely the other "must have."

A lot of stuff... A must have for any GM
By Dressi
If you are GMing star wars, living force or the like... this is a must. Why? It provides so much more than the Core Rule book does as far as specialized weaponry. It has simply pictures of selected weaponry, devices and droids. It has several new things that can really give your campaign that edge, taking into a different level of difficulty or adventure. It can also give your characters power they didn't know existed.
Each item comes listed with its type, a small description, Price (standard), how available it actually is and which Era it comes from (a real plus). For weapons it gives everything the RCR gives along with Hardness and Break DC's. Such weapons include the BlasTech DLT-20A 3d8+3 30m Long blaster, Disruptor Pistols, Mobile Mortars, a variety of Hold out blasters, including the Happy Surprise (palm blaster). It's melee section isn't nearly as extensive as its ranged section. There are some nasty specialized weapons like the Verpine Shatter Gun (6d6) or the Rodian Repulsor Knives. Many different types of weapon attachements and a guideline for customizing your own weapons.
Similarly there are the same thing for armors. Featuring multiple types of armor, from A/K Tracker Utility Vest, to the Shadowsuit to the AV-1A Assault Armor (that looks like something off of Warhammer).
There is a nice list of droids that basically is an expansion of the RCR's list. Nothing really new, as far as game mechanics go, but a nice new list to pick and chose from. There is also a nice new listing for Vehicles in the same way for the droids, a basic expansion from the RCR. The Equipment section has a new lift providing different brands of the most common items, with a more extensive list and with some more speicalized items, like detection equipment, sensors and blaster repair kits. Again, everything comes priced with listedd availability and era availability.
Again this is a must have for any GM. One of the first books I pass around before each module is this one. People make profession rolls, get some money, want to buy something, and this book is the first thing they turn to for merchandise. Now being the GM i am, i place certain restrictions, but that's just between you as the GM and the player. As far as any player goes... this is the book that you'll need to make that signature weapon for your bounty hunter, the location to find that R2 unit you've been looking for, or just finally have that little mobile mortar handy when you need it.
"Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for having a good blaster at you side."

A must have for Players & GM
By James R. Pinkerton
WEAPONS

The selection of weapons is HUGE (even adding more types than the RCRB has listed). Each weapon has WPs & break DCs (which I also like). Along with new rules on Customizing & personalizing weapons.

Species chip (a optional device for Sonic weapons) - which increases effectiveness against a selected species (a few species is listed, but a GM can add more if he/she wishes) - and they are pretty cheap too.

ARMOR

Vast selection of armor & protective gear. Also rules for non-human species.

DROIDS

All Astromech units are included (which are my favorite). They also have many, many more droid types & units listed.

VEHICLES

Rules on custimizing. A big selection including : airspeeders, swoops, speeder bikes, and many more.

Also for the STAR WARS fan who is familiar with Tatooine, this book also includes the popular "Sandcrawler".

OTHER

There's even a section on jetpacks & other devices that let you fly.

There are a lot more things in here (buy the book, I'm not telling you everything).

An excellent story along with two sorta OK stories
By Richard Mann
Hmm. There's not much info on this product in the list above, so maybe I'd better clue you in on what we have here.

It's a single cassette tape, originally priced at $5.99. It contains one long and two shorter stories. The long one is Janet Dawson's "Little Red Corvette," which is the 5-star story. It also contains "The Kid and the Man from Pinkerton's" by Marele Day and "Heels" by Donna Huston Murray.

The Dawson story is as good as her novels. PI Jerry Howard, a woman, is asked to investigate why a repair shop is trying to sell a classic red Corvette way below the market. A potential buyer is afraid there's something wrong, so he asks his friend Jerry to check it out. As she does, she finds murder and skulduggery galore in the history of the car. There are a few weak moments, but nothing serious. I really enjoyed the story.

Day's story about the man from Pinkerton's sets an interesting atmosphere involving a Pinkerton man chasing "the Kid," a gunslinger who has killed 37 men, across the desert. The situation is interesting. The quickly reached conclusion is not very satisfying. As it ended, my wife and I looked at each other and shrugged.

We also listened to Murray's story, "Heels." That was four days ago. I have to tell you that I can't remember what it was about. There's a sentence on the back of the tape box about the story: "A not-so-innocent woman is dead. PI Sandy McGuinn knows how to attract 'malcontents of the opposite sex' -- can she attract the killer?" Even with that hint, I can't recall the details of the story. Maybe it's not very memorable, eh?
