My Review:
Wow. I stayed up WAY too late last night reading this book and am still blown away by it this morning. HUGE KUDOS to the authors on this one...taking two tortured, wounded souls like Riley and Hunter and letting them find love in a mental institution of all places. The unlikelihood of this story line working was HUGE, but they did it...and it's a gorgeous, heart-breaking, beautiful story that had me both sobbing and laughing out loud. I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Now, why you should go pick it up and fall in love, too...

This book is about two men who are flat-out broken. Riley has been in the institution (this time) for 19 months after trying to kill himself. Riley's backstory broke and shredded my heart. He was kidnapped at the age of 6, tortured and beaten for 4 years, before he was found. But then he was so messed up, his mom and dad abandoned him to the government system. Can you imagine what that does to a person? Even thinking about it now, I get weepy for him. He did nothing wrong and is coping the only way he knows how.

New in the institution is Hunter. He's an alcoholic who's bender the day of his mother's funeral went too far. He drank entirely too much and then had a field day taking whatever he could find out of his mother's medicine cabinet. But his problems, too, go much, much deeper than just that.

These are two men that are broken. They both have lost so much, but they've lost the ability to care for themselves too. This is not a light-hearted book. There are moments of pain and desolation that just about killed me to read them. But there's hope, too. There were scenes in the book that made me cry happy tears too for just how beautiful they were...the imaginary dates to New Orleans.

Then there's also the amazing cast of characters in the story...Bubba kept me laughing until I started sobbing. I wasn't sure I was going to make it through his sections of the story. Jerry and how he wants these guys to make it mentally. You can tell that he sees they can heal, even when they don't believe it. Riley's doctor...wow, I did not expect to be so blown away by him/her (?) at the end.

There are so many powerful messages to this story and I applaud the authors for their bravery in tackling this kind of truly tough subject matter. I fell in love with these two heroes and think you will too. Buy this one...you won't regret it. It's beautiful!

This story explores the journey back to mental health that Riley Connors, a young man kidnapped when he was four-years-old, has to struggle through to find any peace and happiness in life. The only thing that seems to spark his desire for recovery is the man he meets in the mental health hospital, Hunter Morgan, an alcoholic/addict who was committed for attempted suicide.

Riley is “a lifer” when he meets Hunter, having given up all hope for any life outside the facility. He’s angry at the world, principally because his mother rejected him after he spent four years with his kidnappers, years when he was physically and emotionally abused. He’s unable to fuTnction in the real world, his anger causing him to either act out or shut down completely. When he meets Hunter, he’s shocked to discover that he actually might be able to have a friend because there’s something about this man that draws out Riley’s humanity.

Hunter, on the other hand, is attracted to Riley, at first because he looks hot with his tousled curls and tattooed good looks, but later because he sees Riley’s vulnerability and he’s drawn to the real man Riley keeps hidden from the rest of the world.

This is an emotionally painful story that would be difficult to listen to if it weren’t for the outstanding narration by Michael Ferraiuolo. The story is heartbreaking, yes, but the narration carries us right through to the hope for a positive future for both men. Hunter’s life back in the real world starts after he completes his mandatory time in treatment when he’s released to his brother’s care and is committed to both aftercare counseling and attendance at AA meetings. And he follows through on those, hoping that he might be able to see Riley again one day despite the hospital’s policy that those released can’t socialize with former patients. He keeps up a mail correspondence, however, and manages to maintain their friendship and a small hope that they’ll see each other again.

Riley, alone and bereft of friends once Hunter leaves, finally determines that he doesn’t want to spend his life in the facility and neither does he want to die. It’s the first time he’s felt anticipation for a life beyond the hospital facility and the first time he’s expressed a willingness to try to reach a point where he can function in the world.

I loved the way the authors sketched the personalities and characters of these men, giving us first an outline and then fleshing in the details as the story went on. Though both men were emotionally damaged, both were appealing to each other and, of course, to readers. Their relationship grew slowly and their care and eventual love for each other was beautiful to witness.

I highly recommend this audiobook version of this story to all lovers of MM romance. If you enjoy hurt-comfort stories or stories with an emotionally damaged hero, you should love this one since you get two damaged heroes for the price of one. Put this on your wish list for the holidays. It’s a wonderful treat.

From word one, I had no doubt that this would be a rather angsty read. I was accurate in my prediction.

The first few chapters had this disjointed frenetic energy to them. Break through that were a few moments that felt grounded and contained some logic in relation to what the story appeared to be. Surreal. That’s the word that best describes it for me.

Reality soon landed, though, supplanting that dreamlike non-linear feeling. Unfortunately, this made the disconnected quality of the writing more obvious to me. The words were telling me about the emotion that was there but the word choices instead felt stiff and stilted. I kept reading because the main characters, Riley and Hunter, were interesting and kept teasing me with tidbits about their lives, current and past, and I wanted to find out what was going to happen.

Both Riley and Hunter take turns in narrating but in a removed way. I connected with them in certain moments, but then it would slip through my fingertips. Still, I kept reading, hoping to feel that connection again and more deeply.

The interesting thing is the dialogue is good. It matches the characters, conveys their emotions well and made it feel real. These are the moments in which I most felt the connection to Riley and Hunter. My curiosity was poked and piqued and needed to be satisfied. Always a good thing to evoke in a reader.

Riley and Hunter are sweet together, even from early on. They both put themselves out there in ways they were able, comforting and gently pushing one another to begin ridding themselves of the years of pain and baggage they’re each carrying around. Some of their conversations, and inner dialogue, were peppered with some fun turns of phrase.

All of this boils down to an unsteady push and pull that made it difficult for me to get a firm hold on the story and the characters. The story more so than the characters, though. The characters were rather well fleshed out but maybe the authors weren’t quite sure how to fully utilize them? On the flipside, there’s no mistaking where this story takes place, the why and how, but with so much more telling than showing in both thought and emotion, the story kept slipping from my grasp. Nothing is left unsaid with nearly everything being readily handed over. It feels like an incredibly personal story that the authors may not have been completely ready to share. Just a feeling, nothing more than that.

This has a very good message regarding productive, meaningful therapy and how it can truly be helpful. Helpful seems too light a term, actually. It can be life changing. Not in a grand sweeping way, more in that it can help someone get back to who they really are, maybe an even better version. This I’ve experienced and very much like its portrayal here. Ok, not so much some of the idiot orderlies and doctors, and the feel of the place itself, but you get a good doctor and it can click and mean so much.

Speaking of place, the physical descriptions them and the characters made it very easy for me to picture it all. I translated to a comfort I felt in reading a story about not so comfortable subjects and two guys trying to deal with them.

All in all, this was a wobbly trip that ended in an emotional ending for me. :)

Not really for "non-programmers"

For several years now I have been looking for a resource that truly explains how to use VBA to people who are not programmers. This does the job partially.

Maybe I'm just looking for something that doesn't exist. But, I would just like someone to explain in simple (non-programming) elementary terms what common terms in VBA mean.

For example: "Activecell.value" - I think that means something about the cell you have highlighted and where your cursor is is the "active cell". But, TELL ME that. THEN, what does the addition of the term "value" mean? etc etc.

I could do this manually but I figured it will take a half day and it will be boring. so I downloaded the book and start reading

I consider myself as a fairly experienced weekend programmer (python,c++, javascript etc.,) However, I have never touched VBA before. Time over time I thought about learning VBA but never had a chance. I finally looked up Amazon when I was given a task list in Excel form which needed a serious reworking. the list item count was about 400. Some of the item need to be duplicated multiple times par the information on one column value. I could do this manually but I figured it will take a half day and it will be boring.
so I downloaded the book and start reading. I went through the whole material in one sitting. I started to experiment with the test file when I was at 50% of the book, at 80% of the book, I had a working VBA code that solved my problem. and now I have a cleaned up list with 600+ item count. Since I already knew about decision tree and looping, What I needed to start learning was how the program will interact with Excel cells and its contents. The book gave me these learning points very quickly. Also the author introduce "record macro" as the way to read and learn the VBA code and debugging technique early in the book. this turned out to be very helpful. Money and time worth spent. It was an exciting three hours.

VBA book that will boost up your Excel performance if you do not know VBA

I am a blogger, writing articles for VBA, C# and other interesting programming languages. Upon a request from my site, I was provided with a Kindle version of the book for a review

First things first - I am not sure what should be done to pursue the non-IT people, that VBA is not something difficult and every hour you spend, trying to master it would pay out by saving 20 others, pressing ctrl+arrows and copying endless ranges in Excel. That is why I am always eager to take a look into the VBA books and to review them in my site. As far as this one was for non programmers and I am not exactly a non-programmer, I was really interested what it can teach a person with no idea in VBA and I tried to find at least 3 VBA tricks I did not know. So here they are.

The things I did not know before reading:

1. The fact that if you record a macro in excel in the Personal Macro Workbook, it would be recorded into a Personal.xlsb file, loaded when Excel starts and available for all workbooks, as shown in the next two screenshots:

2. The "Use Relative References" possibility for recording a macro - a good option, if you want to avoid hardcoding of the range. Thus, the code is recorded with offsets, based on the current selection. Quite useful for a beginner.

3. Creating a "switch for value changes - this is simply a macro, which takes into account the current state of a given TRUE/FALSE feature and returns it with the other one. E.g. if a column is hidden, it makes it not hidden and vice versa. I was doing this with if, but the current code is way better and faster. It simply takes the status of the column and makes it reverse. Here is what it looks like:

Lets start with the real review now :)

The screenshots of the Kindle edition were clear and easy to understand. I liked the way the range selection was thoroughly explained. It was explained with the Excel shortcuts and the VBA code, which actually runs them.

E.g. Ctrl+Shift+8 => ActiveCell.CurrentRegion.Select. This was worthy! Some valuable tips for beginners were given, that save a lot of time - e.g. "do not copy a single cell value to another cell, but use Range("a4").Value - Range("a3").Value". Local and watch window are explained. If you are new to Excel VBA, try to make a habit to use the Watch window, it would be of use later. I myself do it rarely, but if I was accustomed to it from the beginning my performance would have been higher. At a later stage, the variables are explained, with some good explanation for Date and Time, which is a key variable in VBA (and is not mistaken as in Excel, good work for Microsoft there). At a later stage I liked the way the message box and the conditional operators were explained together. This saves time for the reader :) User defined functions, error handling and events were also explained on a level that would be understandable for a beginner.

What I liked really much in the book, was the last two chapters - the last one was concerning some useful codes, that may increase your interest into VBA development. (The switch for value changes from above is from there.). The last chapter is with exercises. You can solve them with your knowledge from the book, the correct code is not provided.
So, long story short - the book is for beginners in programming. If you are working with Excel on a daily basis, you will profit from the book, if you have no VBA experience. If you are an experienced VBA user, then look for something else. And just do not be afraid to try the code as it goes.

Contagious inspiration and motivational drive

GIFTED HANDS, an autobiographical look into the life of one of the best neurosurgeons in the U. S. of A, is so unbelievably inspirational and poignant. If 100 people simultaneously read this book, I assure you at least one of them would walk away a changed person! I know Ben Carson has changed me. From now on, I'm vowing to do my absolute best. This year of homeschooling has given me many opportunities to "slack off" as one might say - I've taken a few of those opportunities. Even though I ended up with mostly As, I'm vowing to give my all into my academic performance next year. Ben Carson's motivational drive is absolutely contagious!
Benjamin Carson, M.D started out on the mean Detroit streets. His father had to leave the family after it was found he was practically living a double life: he had a girlfriend and another family while married to Ben's mother. While his mother assured him the family would be fine, they had to struggle to make ends meet. Yet all the while, she kept pushing and pushing Ben to be the best he could possibly be. All the while, she knew he had it in him to get out of the Detroit ghetto in which they lived. All the while, she knew he'd make something of himself. And he did.
We see an amazing transformation from a skeptical kid, unsure of life, to an intelligent neurosurgeon with a heart of gold - so much so that he can't help but break down and cry when surgery results in the death of a patient. He is a person who made the best of his education, as well as his college years. He went from being the best to simply doing his best and can be regarded as an inspiration to all because his standard of life he began with wasn't as favorable as many rich families who have attended Ivy League colleges for generations. In his case, he along with his older brother, Curtis, were the first in the family to attend colleges. Curtis ended up at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor and Ben enrolled at Yale University, where he met his wife, Candy.
Ben's beginnings were certainly not easy. Signs of determination showed as young as the age of 10. He started out as the "class dummy" in school, frequently getting every single question on his math tests wrong. But then, through hard work and a lot of reading at the local library, plus a new presciption for glasses, he expanded his knowledge in every subject. Soon, "good" wasn't good enough. Ben was driven to be the best. In fact, he was so driven that he won a full scholarship to the renowned Yale University.
God has clearly played a pivotal role in Ben's life. Before operating, he always prays to the Lord. But one life experience in particular especially is one I won't soon forget. Ben feared flunking a Yale exam and knew last-minute cramming would do him no good. As he slept, he dreamt of the mathematical facts and figures and equations. The next day, he nervously proceeded to take the exam and realized many of the questions had been in his prior dream! After a lot of worrying, Ben scored a 97 on the exam. He knew it was God's way of helping him.
What I most enjoy about this autobiography is the way in which Ben addresses the readers. Whether his audience ranges from the age of 13 to the age of 99, either age should enjoy it. Clearly, Ben is a brilliant genius. He speaks eloquently, yet he doesn't throw in the "big words" he could probably use if he chose to. Instead, his story is told through simple language that anyone can understand.
Ben Carson ought to be regarded as a role model for today's youth. Those not on the right path to a successful future could especially benefit, as a book like this could assist in a serious straightening out of priorities. As I mentioned before, Ben's motivational drive is contagious and inspiring! This down-to-earth doctor's story is really meant for everyone, teens and adults alike.

If you can believe, you can achieve--is Ben Carson

Anyone having trials in their life, will find this book a positive uplift. I found myself identifing with Ben, when he was faced with the first chemistry final at Yale. The sense of divine intervention on his behalf in regards to the test and his acknowledgement of God as the source was/is a pivot point. Without a high grade at that key point, Ben Carson, probably would not have become the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins at age 33. The power of God awaits anyone needing the service of the brillant mind and "Gifted Hands" of Dr. Ben Carson. The thrill of his success comes through when reading the book. You too can join his journey and visualize and vocalize what you too may be. Guidance for becoming a better person is being lived out in the life of one, Ben Carson, M.D. Thank you, GOD for such a man, a living example.

A Gifted Neurosurgeon's Biography

Dr. Ben Carson is living proof that we are NOT mere products of our environments. He overcame a broken home, bad temper, and racial inequality to become a great man, loving father, and famous Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. In this well paced, informative biography, Carson speaks about the different goals he set for himself throughout his productive life and how he, through patience, hard work, and faith in God, went about achieving them. This was an enjoyable biography, an unusually humble one from someone in the medical profession who has earned every right to brag about his achievements, yet who deliberately avoids doing so. You will enjoy reading this book.

I have read this book a few times on my own and it has really helped me on my journey with Christ. It made my relationship with Him feel more intimate. Fiske ( Understanding Popular Culture ) mixes case studies and theory in a jargon-laden but provoking assessment of ways in which ordinary people fight power-blocs in a society lacking a "broadly shared consensus of values and priorities." Fiske suggests, for example, that sports offers its fans a limited opportunity to know and master a field without being subject to the control of experts. Similarly, he suggests that Elvis fans find community in rejecting the official account of his death. Fiske examines the Smithsonian Institutions's 1991 look at the exploitative side of the frontier West, observing that while advocates of "high" culture hotly debate multiculturalism, popular culture has been invaded by revisionist movies like Dances with Wolves . His most interesting chapters delve into race relations, observing, for instance, the "counter-knowledge" purveyed by black-oriented radio stations, corresponding to a black experience of reality that differs from whites'. Fiske concludes that the current power-bloc still isn't ready to negotiate a new multicultural consensus, though he's hardly ready to define one himself.

This is an outstanding reference for the American dilemma.

This publication gives the reader a dynamic understanding of the nature of mankind as it relates to power. We are able to see ourselves as we struggle to control everything in our environment under the disquise of seeking to understand things. It is extremely abstract and should be read with others to discuss general content and have group feedback. It offers some reasonable solutions to the problems in American culture today.
