Used the 3rd edition for three years (since release), and generally like it

When I began my undergraduate studies in Materials Science and Engineering, this was the book that was required. It's since been a great companion through (almost) all of my undergraduate courses, and is an extremely handy reference as a graduate student. I also had the pleasure of TAing for a section of our Intro. to Materials course this term, and I have some observations about this text. I hope that the publishers and authors work on some of the issues below in the fifth edition (since the fourth doesn't seem to have changed much/any from what I have seen so far).

PROS
1. Great text and figures: the text is highly readable and does a good job of placing nuances of certain equations and figures in plain sight (e.g. the conditional definition of "a" is clearly visible near the fracture toughness equation, etc.).
2. Great introductory/refresher level in ALL areas: the authors avoid giving "special treatment" to their pet subjects like many authors do in other undergraduate texts.
3. Good binding, construction, and paper. (Although this particular "pro" might be a "con" to some, see point #5.)

CONS
4. Problems can use a little bit of actual thought before the fifth edition instead of simply rearranging them (again): one of the largest problems with this text is the overuse of tiny figures in the homework. This makes life miserable as a student (trust me, I remember this clearly), and, amazingly, even MORE hellish as a TA and grader. Do the publishers honestly think that students will turn in scanned/printed figures with homework? Of course not! In the 21st century, I would think that there would be a clever way to make access to figures easier, like including them on the (otherwise pretty useless) CD. This pretty much my only problem with this text.

OTHER THOUGHTS
5. The cost for a new edition of this is well worth it for an undergraduate materials science student or graduate student preparing for a qualifier. HOWEVER, this is NOT the target audience in real life. Instead, this text is bought and sold quite frequently by mechanical engineers and biomedical engineers who have no interest in hanging onto a book that is worth a month's rent. Could the publishers consider a paperback (or other lower-cost) edition for those folks who don't actually care to hang onto this text?

this textbook saved my life for my materials science class. If you have a bad teacher who doesn't even go through example problems and just reads off years old slides that are somewhat relevant to the topic, this textbook will cover everything you need to know

A must have for welders and fabricators

I saved a lot of money buying thins book through amazon. The price was great and so was the quality. This book was exactly the same that the school was selling used for $50 more. It came in great condition with notes from the last user (this was a great help in understanding the material) The Book covers the basics of materials science and I'm sure it will be a great resource for years to come. The information in here is very applicable to anyone planning on building products that need to last. The chapter summary's at the end of each chapter have a list of equations and explanation of the variables. The charts are incredibly useful too. I am a fabricator and have referred to the tables multiple time to determine what type of steel to use for different applications.

Great book for students!

As a recent graduate pursuing a career in architecture, I found this book incredibly informative. The breakdown of architecture positions, as well as architecture related fields is invaluable, and something I never really learned in college. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a comprehensive overview of the architecture field, especially college students who are trying to narrow down their career path.

A Good Book For Beginners

I thought that Ryan had a lot of practical advice in his book. He tells you what you need to know to be successful in getting your foot in the door, and also how to advance once you do get your foot in the door. He also is frank about why people should be architects. He also doesn't pull any punches in regards to why you shouldn't be an architect as well. Very helpful.

SO HELPFUL!

My ESOL students adore this book as do I. As intermediate students they realize grammar is key to communication. It's both deflating and encouraging to know how many tenses of verbs exist. Of course it's true of their native tongues, too, but they take great pride in having learned half of them now! I have these 'verb bibles' as I call them in several languages.

If I could give ZERO stars, I would.

Save your money. If I could have given this ZERO stars I would have. Wiley clearly is focused on just collecting the cash. Not only does the book not do an adequate job of covering the topics of the Series 3 exam, but it is also riddled with mistakes, miscalculations, typos, and errors.

For instance, in the practice questions section, there are numerous cases where the correct answer is mislabeled -- you have to be sure to read all the explanations to be certain you didn't answer it correctly but they've scored it wrong. Also, in the NFA/CFTC disclosures section, there is a whole block of text that was seemingly cut and paste incorrectly from another section. These errors go on and on. There are easily 10 errors / mistakes in each chapter. For the price of the book and the reputation of Wiley, I would have expected much better quality.

I find myself in the position of now having to go out and purchase additional exam prep materials because I feel like this doesn't even get me halfway there. Before you go thinking I'm just a poor test-taker, know that I successfully studied and passed my Series 7 and 63, each with >95%. So, it's not that I'm not capable. It's just a terrible product. I can't say it enough. Don't bother with this one.

Errors and typos throughout

This book is a head scratcher. So many errors and typos etc. throughout its rather odd. The test sections are confusing because the answers conflict with the info. Can't leave a review on their website so I left it here. Not really a good buy for the money unless you already have a firm understanding of the material

I agree with the previous comments. While the book does give basic fundamentals as to the information required for the series 3 exam. I found that I learned more through internet resources and supplementation materials than I did with this book. I passed my exam but there is no way I could have with just this book alone. In regards to the typos and incorrect calculations, they are commonplace throughout almost every chapter. Overall I would not waste the money, if you can find this book secondhand then do so and avoid paying for the cost of the book.

About the Author

Lewis A. Coser (1913-2003) began his career teaching at the University of Chicago followed by the University of California. Upon leaving California he went to teach for fifteen years at Brandeis University, where he founded the sociology department, before finally settling in at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He was the first sociologist to bring together the ideas of conflict theory and structural functionalism. He is a past American Sociologist Association president and author of many works, including Conflict and Consensus, Masters of Sociological Thought, and The Functions of Social Conflict.

You say "conflict" like it's a bad thing . . .

This stimulating work explores the paradoxical thesis that conflict is not socially destructive in most cases, but rather an essential mechanism in the positive evolution of society. I am not well versed in the literature of sociology, but it appears to me that since its appearance in 1956, this little book has achieved deservedly the status of a classic.

Over the course of eight chapters the author discusses sixteen propositions regarding the nature of social conflict. Each proposition is stated initially as a quotation from the work "Conflict" of German sociologist Georg Simmel ("Der Streit," 1908). The author then comments on the initial statement, drawing on his obviously vast learning in the fields of sociology, psychology, politics, and history. Each of the sixteen commentaries concludes with a restatement of the original proposition incorporating modifications deemed appropriate from the survey of more recent works.

This structure makes the book as useful as a reference as it is interesting to read straight through. The reader who wants only to refresh the memory or who is interested in only part of the work can easily locate the relevant numbered proposition.

I can think of no better way to convey a sense of this work than to rephrase below in my own words some of the key propositions:

Proposition 2: The ability to engage in conflict with disagreeable individuals allows us to remain in a social relationship with them. Conflict prevents them from growing even more abusive while also giving us some emotional satisfaction. Without conflict, we would be forced to withdraw altogether from social contact with such people.

Proposition 7: Open societies derive strength from the large number of antagonistic groups that they include. Cross-membership in a number of these groups keeps individuals from orienting themselves on one side or the other of a single dividing issue threatening social cohesion. The varied antagonisms and conflicts cancel each other out.

Proposition 8: Relationships characterized by open and frequent conflict are often the most stable. Conflict tends to be suppressed by parties who fear that their relationship is too unstable to survive the tumult.

Proposition 13: Conflict tends to bind the antagonists into acceptance of a common social order. Conventions regarding the rules of warfare are one outstanding example. Virtually all law is the result of social conflict.

Proposition 14: Despite the disadvantages of disunity in conflict, the parties to any given conflict will tend to prefer unity in the ranks of their adversaries. Only a unified adversary can be counted upon to adhere to the rules of engagement and to the terms of the agreement that concludes the conflict.

My own interest in reading "The Functions of Social Conflict" arose from a desire to pursue the intriguing similarity between its thesis and the arguments of certain writers on the process of group decision-making. They claim that getting a group together to understand the differences among them can build a strong social bond. The process to reach understanding can be ugly when there are strongly conflicting interests, but the social bond that results can be a powerful force keeping the group together through the difficulties of developing a joint solution to their problem. I can't prove it, but I'd bet that these writers have read Lewis Coser.

An index and extensive footnotes add usefulness to the inherent interest of this fine book.

About the Author

Robert B. Talisse is Professor of Philosophy and Political Science at Vanderbilt University. Talisse is the editor of the journal, Public Affairs Quarterly, and is co-host of the podcast, "New Books in Philosophy." He is the author of five books, including Engaging Political Philosophy: An Introduction (forthcoming), Pluralism and Liberal Politics (Routledge, 2011), and Democracy and Moral Conflict (2009), which was a finalist for the 2011 APA Book Prize, and he co-wrote with Scott F. Aikin, Pragmatism: A Guide for the Perplexed (2008).

Scott F. Aikin is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University. His previous books include, Epistemology and the Regress Problem (Routledge 2010) and Pragmatism: A Guide for the Perplexed (with Robert B, Talisse, 2008).

Law and Philosophy

For any pre-law or philosophy student this is a must read. It provides a more philosophical approach to how one should argue and the reasoning of why much of we call arguments in our daily lives are fallacies which are casted on the premonition that there are a lot of obvious truths and advertisements provide factual information about products.
Aikin and Talisse's novel i believe is crucial for a good philosophical read as well as and political science major going into Law.

Basics of a decent discussion

I like that the authors believe in arguments. I agree that a good discussion can either fine-tune my arguments or change my opinion. I would have liked more examples - here's how X won the argument over Y, here's how Z forced W to change position on subject P. And, of course, too few examples of international political disagreement.

Silly, pretentious and useless

A silly, pretentious and monumentally useless book. The authors lay claim, to a smug, self=satisfied philosophical expertise their work shows no evidence of them actually possessing. Reminiscent of a not-too-bright school-teacher who has been drafted into teaching philosophy and mugged up on a couple of texts without understanding them. Their own prejudices stick out a mile. Save your money.
