Good review book

This WMA book gives a well-rounded review of wilderness protocols for readers already familiar with the topic. But it is by no means a complete textbook or reference material. Several commonly encountered illnesses were given less treatment.

Content was easy to read and laid out in a logical order. The most helpful part of the book included special wilderness considerations.

I've been taken over three WFA and AWFA certifications and this manual was the most helpful in completing the WFR course requirements. I couldn't have padded the test without it. Wilderness Med Ass has the best approach to an emergency situation in the back country and this text makes it easy to locate exactly what your trying to find when your studying for the exam questions. If you pair this textbook with their field guide you feel like you have the ability to take on any emergency anywhere at any time. If there were six stars available if rate them a seven.

About the Author
Martin Pugh taught history at the Aligarh Muslim University, India, from 1969-71 on V.S.O.; he was Professor of British History at Newcastle University until 1999, and Research Professor in History at Liverpool John Moores University 1999-2002. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a member of the advisory panel of the B.B.C. History Magazine, and the author of eleven books on nineteenth and twentieth century history. He lives in Northumberland where he divides his time between gardening, research and writing.

`we danced all night' a new look at the "depression years"

Simon Pugh's social history of Britain between the First and Second World Wars is an excellent text for the period. Well set out into themed chapters from dietary habits through to sexuality and gender, with excursions into areas as diverse as monarchy, empire, divorce and aviation his book gives readers a thorough understanding of the period. Essentially an advanced text book it reads well and easily, lending itself to dipping in and out to read specific chapters in isolation - very good if you have an essay on interwar society....

However reading all the chapters does reveal several interesting aspects of the period. One is the increasing demise of Scotland (suffering over twice the loss of life of any other region of Great Britain in the War then hit economically very hard by the decline of its heavy industry). More significantly, Pugh argues that far from being the period of economic depression, doom and gloom that it is usually portrayed as, outside depressed areas like Scotland the years were ones of growing prosperity which saw the emergence of much of modern consumerist Britain: aspirations of property owning, the increasing desire for consumer durables, and the restructuring of the economy on services based in the south rather than the traditional heavy industries of the north. Pugh even suggests the second World War is then perceived by society as an obstruction to all of this - hence the widespread desire from very early on in the war to seek an outcome that will broaden this process across society when war ends through a welfare state and greater planned economic development.

I am an architecture student in Los Angeles and I come across a lot of contemporary, modern aesthetics through research for my studio. I cannot say enough about how valuable Future System's prescence is on the architecture frontier.
These folks are not just producing interesting work, it is also their magestic, informed attention to new energy technologies and their benefits to architecture that embosses Future System's unique vision. I appreciate what they are out there producing and how this work is supported with sensible concepts and mind-liberating theorems.

Perfect for the intermediate Chef cookbook develope who wants to do more!

I'm no novice Chef cookbook developer but I'm not an expert either. I've been involved with developing a new configuration strategy for our product that has both Windows- and Linux-based nodes. I have been using Chef for about 8 months now, supporting existing cookbooks, and developing my own. We have an on-premise Chef 12 Enterprise server.

The chapters dealing with the following topics "in-depth" made this book worth having since these are topics I wanted to expand my knowledge on.
- Chef infrastructure
- chef-client run walk through
- knife plugin development
- LWRP and HWRP development
- Chef REST API

I only gave it 4-stars though since I was wishing it had a topic knife bootstrap - anatomy of a bootstrap, modifying or extending bootstrap behavior beyond the custom template, etc. I would've given it a 4.9/5.0 if the rating mechanism allowed me.

A superb introduction to celestial mechanics & astrodynamics;
its clear, precise text and its style of handling difficult
material are unusual in the universe of textbooks on these
two subjects. Both Volume 1 and Volume 2 are highly
recommended. They were written in the early 1970's, so the
reader should realize they are a bit out-of-date in certain
areas ...

A classic ... though somewhat dated even at publication

Samuel Herrick was Professor of Astrodynamics at UCLA, and one of the founders of this (then) new field. (He is generally credited with having invented the name.)
His two-volume Astrodynamics is a very thorough and beautifully written book. Unfortunately, Herrick's perfectionism delayed the publication for some ten years; when the book finally did came out in 1973, it was perceived as "dated."
There is an excellent review from the Soviet viewpoint, by G. N. Duboshin, still available on the internet. From a technical standpoint it is difficult to improve on Duboshin, so I will restrict myself to some supplemental comments.
The book provides a detailed historical record of the field from the days of Newton up to the 1960ies; this is perhaps the major strength of the book. An important contribution is the inclusion of universal variables - a topic Herrick largely developed and steadfastly championed. The book is heavily geared toward optical data (data derived from optical cameras). The inclusion of Leuschner's method for reducing these data (chap. 11) is of special interest historically. (Leuschner was a teacher of Herrick.)
I incorrectly had the impression this book did not use vector or matrix notation, but looking over my copy I see that this is not true. Vectors and matrices are used (e.g., chap. 12), but almost in an ancillary way, and matrices generally appear only as determinants. Herrick includes many detailed worked-out examples ... to be used for checking ones understanding, or perhaps for checking computer code. These might still be useful for checking programs ... but does anyone still write "homebrew?"
Anyone interested in the history of Astrodynamics should have a copy. It might also be good for an introductory text, though a little details oriented. Unfortunately the book tends to be pricey.

Another amazing story Michael!! I loved how you captured the love/hate relationship between Gideon and Violet. She thought he loved her when in reality he couldn't stand her and wished something would happen to her. But all in all I loved it!! So glad you could share this incredible talent of yours with me! I loved this book. The recipes are old,it's from an actress from the 50's on but the casseroles look great. I like that this was a pleasant read .and she loved her kids all 5 of them.go this if you links old Hollywood .its a feel good reada and I'm glad I got to go on one last adventure with ms donahue

Get to know the girl next door

Ever since her "Father Knows Best" days, Elinor Donahue has been a familiar presence on our screens. She always seemed so "up". Is that real, or just acting? After reading this unusual book that is both an autobiography and a cookbook, I've reached the conclusion that Elinor is real, on-screen and off. I don't recall reading a single word in which she said anything bad about anyone. She seems to be as charming and optimistic as her image. She's a lady in the truest sense of the word, and it was a delight to read her book. Now to try out some of those terrific recipes . . . .

Is it appropriate to review a cookbook and say, I've got egg on my face?

Let me explain the title of my review... My sister lent me this book, practically insisting that I read it. And to tell the truth, I was less than interested in doing so. I opened it with a sigh, with a feeling of obligation.

But from the first page, I was immediately taken with Ms. Donahue's anecdotes of her film and television career, her personal relationships; her lifelong friendships and other warm memories. To my surprise, I really LIKED reading this. In fact, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to know what was going to happen next in Elinor's life.

As a cookbook, however... Well, strictly speaking it's not really a cookbook. But even though I found a few nice new recipes I'm willing to try out, as Ms. Donahue admits, plenty of these recipes don't really suit today's more health-conscious lifestyle. Many of the recipes fall under the proviso of "comfort food" (read: caloric, sugary, salty).

Still, I do look forward to trying Jane Wyatt's great-grandmother's rice pudding recipe. And besides, this is a really nice memoir of a life well lived, and is very enjoyable reading.
