What the Mistress Did, by Anya Delvay

Oh, the delicious peril of deception…

Lady Marianne Gillingham has no intention of ending her affair with David Dunscombe, Earl Harrington, despite his pending nuptials. She craves his attentions, and he satisfies her deepest yearnings.

Yet, when his fiancée, the sweet, innocent and oh-so-very young Annabelle Frazier, appears on her doorstep to demand the end of the association, Marianne realizes she does not wish to be second in David’s affections. She also cannot resist issuing a warning. The earl will bed his wife with tedious regularity, but never reveal his more unusual desires.

To Marianne’s amusement, her prediction comes true, with a surprising twist. The countess is back with a new demand: repair the problem her prophetic words created. Taking pleasure in imagining the other woman’s fear and horror, Marianne rekindles the affair to demonstrate exactly how to fulfill David’s lascivious desires—while Annabelle secretly watches from the shadows.

She never expected Annabelle to prove so resilient and surprisingly easy—not to mention delicious—to corrupt. Or that the ensuing erotic tangle would be impossible to put right without heartbreak.

Warning: Loosen your stays and have your fan at hand. Plumes and floggers, along with some other leather devices, were employed in the creating of this erotic tangle. Contains Georgian ladies behaving badly, often with each other. M/F/F, M/F, F/F action herein.

Good story with realistic storyline
By Riane Holt
As reviewed on kinkybookreviews dot com:
Lady Marianne Gillingham is a widow having an affair with the Earl of Harrington, David Dunscombe. When Annabelle, David's young and innocent new fiancé, appears on her doorstep demanding that she end the affair, Marianne enjoys sharing a bit of information with the naive little Annabelle. She tells her that her husband will come to her bed every night, do his duty the same way every night, and she will always wonder what he's not sharing with her. Once Annabelle leaves, she decides that she doesn't want to be the other woman. Doing her best to ignore the pain it causes her, she ends the affair.

When the predictions come true, Annabelle is distraught and demands Marianne teach her how to please her husband. Wanting to see David happy, even if she's not, and liking the idea of corrupting the innocent, Marianne agrees and sets into motion a plan to introduce Annabelle to the darker side of sex. It works much better than she expects... and also puts her heart even more at risk.

I liked this book... and I hated this book. Does that make sense? I found the story very interesting and it flowed quite well. The sex scenes were hot and varied, which I like. I could relate to Marianne. Like her, I have reached the stage in my life where I think I must have eaten that box of chocolates. I was torn as to where I hoped the story went and as with most things, you hope for the best, expect the worst and what you get is well... a little bit of both.

The story is historical. That's not normally my cup of tea, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of this book. I do wish the book continued a little bit further. The ending felt a bit cut off. Kind of like the author had reached the end of her allotted words so she just wrapped it up. Some things to know depending on your comfort zone. There were a few BDSM scenes that were on the rougher side so if that's a problem for you, don't read this. There is both FemDom and MaleDom in the story.

This story is not light, airy, and smiles all around. However, it isn't overly dark either. Just make sure you are in the right mindset before starting. But do read it as it is a very good story. As this is the first book I've ever read by Anya Delvay, I've definitely added her to my watch list. If you wish to know more about her, please visit her website.

UPDATED TO ADD: Ok, I think the "I liked this book... and I hated this book" has been misunderstood by a few. I liked the book. What I hated was the fact that this story is true to life and well... life tends to be a bit disappointing in the long run and hurt is a common occurrence. That's NOT a knock against the author or the job she did on this book. The book is great and to be honest, any book that draws strong feelings from you, either way, is the mark of a well told story. The feelings it left me with were ... realistic. I generally read books to escape reality. Nevertheless, sometimes a little reality is a good thing. When I am in that mindset, I'd reach again for this book. Hopefully that helps clear some things up.

scorned mistress seeks her revenge
By kindle reader
3.7 stars
Historical/ Erotica/ BDSM.... f/m (most), f/f (less), f/f/m (once)
136 pages

For erotica, this is very well-written. The character development of the narrator and watching her mind in action is actually quite interesting. All of the sex scenes weren't entirely my thing, but they were done well for what they were. If I were straight or bi with a stronger penchant for BDSM, maybe I'd of rated this one higher. It's told in first person point of view from the very reflective and somewhat melancholy perspective of a mistress... a widow deeply in love with a man who marries a younger woman.

Sexy Lady Marianne Gillingham has a passion for David Dunscombe... as he does for her. She satisfies his darker sexual proclivities and he satisfies hers. Totally switchy dynamics. The story opens with a focus on these two. Despite how they feel about each other, David is expected to take on a younger wife... widows seldom marry twice. Stuck in the midst of London's societal expectations during this time period, they play out their frustrations in the bedroom.

David's pretty, young, and inexperienced fiancée shows up on Marianne's doorstep demanding an end to their affair thinking she will solely satisfy her soon-to-be husband... but she soon finds herself returning yet again to Marianne's doorstep hoping to be mentored in exactly what that might take. With a delicious inclination for corrupting Annabelle's innocence and undertones of vengeance as a scorned lover... Marianne invites her to play. It is this connection that drew me into the story and why I gave it a chance. Love the premise.

Now Marianne is a bisexual with a passion for men. I didn't really get this from reading the reviews. But in her heart of hearts she wants David. Yes, she has a female lover (mostly out of loneliness) and images of women fill her mind, even when she's with men. But her heart belongs to David and men are the first she seeks out as lovers. As a lesbian, I found this emotional aspect of the story disappointing... even though she genuinely cares for her female lovers. I suspect this emotionally straight-centered direction is how most of these sexually mixed books will go... which is why I will be less inclined to read them in the future. Emotionally unsatisfying for a reader like me and the f/f descriptions are somewhat weaker than the m/f descriptions.

So Marianne deviously rekindles her affair with David and invites his new wife to study them from the shadows where David cannot see her. This "mentoring" soon expands into some hot times between these two ladies... until Annabelle definitely loses her innocence...

Meanwhile, emotions do develop between these two. Just when I was getting into their connection, Marianne's deep-seated longing for David gets in the way. Mood killer for lesbians there. yep. But there are some definite hot parts between these two... loved their final scene. I'd say Annabelle might have a stronger emotional connection to Marianne... this I did like. Like falling for that teacher who completely reset your thinking. Hard not to.

The sex scenes are generous and quite varied (including f/f strap on and f to m anal). Though I don't have the most positive imagery of what is meant by a leather dildo for the strap on. I'm not sure how one could be fashioned for the shape required without sharp edges and I had an unsettling reaction to the idea. Most of the m/f sex just seemed painful. Overall, I wanted a little more romance and softness embedded here... a little too rough for my tastes. Nothing so weird or brutal that I had to skim though. But if you like that sort of thing, there's plenty of that here. Tickling as well, lol. Sometimes I couldn't tell what the heck position these people were in.

In some cases, Marianne's aggressiveness is very sexy and appealing... maybe even a little scary. She's a fascinating character for sure. But maybe too cruel and aloof and man-centered for me to fall in love with. And oh lordy, what is goin' on between her legs?! She's hung like a transman on T. Interesting... not even the lezzies in my lesfic go there, lol. Anywho. I'd of been nuts over a purely f/f story focusing on just Marianne and Annabelle. THAT would be very, very hot. They had an excellent contrast and some good chemistry when David didn't ruin it.

Interesting ending... even if I can't make sense of the last two lines, lol. But I was impressed at the direction it took and how Marianne's character evolves and reflects. Worth a read if you want to explore these dynamics.

4 Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies
By Lily
Lady Marianne Gillingham is both irritated and amused when the virginal Miss Annabelle Fraiser demands that Marianne break off her affair with David, Lord Harrington. Marianne cedes the field but warns the soon-to-be Lady Harrington that her experience in the marriage bed will surely be unsatisfying, for David will never do to her what he has done with Marianne.

It's not long after Annabelle and David wed that the new Lady Harrington is back - and furious with Marianne for awakening her to the deficiencies in her marriage. She asks Marianne to resume her relationship with David but with a twist; Annabelle will secretly watch and learn what she needs to know to please David. The sensual journey that Marianne and Annabelle soon embark on is nothing like either expects. But soon emotions and passion tangle, and Marianne wonders if it will be possible for any of them to leave this arrangement unscathed.

WHAT THE MISTRESS DID is erotica at its best; sensual, alluring and inventive. Author Anya Delvay takes readers on two journeys; Annabelle's and Marianne's. Under Marianne's hands-on tutelage Anabelle's sexual awakening carries WHAT THE MISTRESS DID through its darker moments. There's joy in Annabelle learning what pleases her, and the caring friendship that develops between her and Marianne was wonderful to read. Marianne's plot - and the overarching plot of the book - is tinged with sadness. She's in love with David but clearly recognizes that she missed her opportunity to claim the whole of him. What made WHAT THE MISTRESS DID fascinating was watching Marianne essentially grow up over the course of the story.

It's nearly impossible to write about WHAT THE MISTRESS DID without mentioning the sex scenes. Ms. Delvay writes vast and varied erotic encounters, some between David and Marianne and even more between Annabelle and Marianne. I love that no one holds back in WHAT THE MISTRESS DID.

WHAT THE MISTRESS DID isn't a "happy" book, but it's ultimately a satisfying read nonetheless. If you're in the mood for historical erotica, then WHAT THE MISTRESS DID is for you.
