The Collier's Weekly Version of The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James

"She was the most beautiful child I had ever seen, and I afterward wondered that my employer had not told me more of her." For the first time since 1898, readers can experience Henry James's eerie The Turn of the Screw the way his original readers did, as a twelve-part weekly serial. The Coffeetown Press edition showcases the novel as it first appeared, complete with provocative illustrations by John La Farge and Eric Pape, in Collier's Weekly. This unique edition, with an analytical introduction by Peter G. Beidler, will of course be valuable to scholars. It will be particularly useful, however, for undergraduate classroom use. It allows readers to experience first-hand the suspense generated by the week-by-week grouping of chapters. It also lets them read the young governess's story of her dangerous encounter with prowling spirits as it first appeared, before James made the 500-odd changes in wording he introduced later. After reading Beidler's detailed appendix analyzing all of James's revisions, readers will see that in many ways this earliest version of The Turn of the Screw was James's best.

About the Author
Henry James was an Anglo-American novelist regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He was the son of Henry James, Sr., a clergyman, and the brother of the philosopher and psychologist William James and the diarist Alice James. James spent the last 40 years of his life in England, becoming a British subject in 1915, one year before his death. He is primarily known for a series of novels in which he portrays the encounter of Americans with Europe and Europeans. His method of writing from the point of view of a character within a tale allows him to explore issues related to consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. Dubbed “The Master” by critics, James contributed significantly to the criticism of fiction, particularly in his insistence that writers be allowed the greatest possible freedom in presenting their view of the world. His imaginative use of point of view, interior monologue and possibly unreliable narrators in his own novels and tales brought a new depth and interest to narrative fiction. The Turn of the Screw is one of the most widely read and often taught novels of the Victorian canon. It has been discussed and theorized by critics of every orientation and is surely one of the most thoroughly dissected literary works of all time.

With original illustrations
By Mandog
As a collector of the art of Eric Pape, this edition is very welcome, containing all his original illustrations printed in original size. A great enjoyable copy of this work for readers. Recommended for those interested in the original publication of this fascinating work. Copies of the original issues of Collier's Weekly containing this story are hard to find and often quite expensive.

Great new edition
By Paul B.
When I was in grad school, we were taught, by a very old man in a Sherlock Holmes hat and cape, that in preparing an edition, you take your accidentals from the first edition and your substantives from the last. The idea was that artists, as they age and revise their work, become greater artists, but that editors gradually introduce more and more typos. Fortunately, this prejudice in favor of the last edition of a literary work was already fading then and is certainly out the window now. This edition of The Turn of the Screw, with its detailed analysis by the editor, should drive the last nail in the coffin of a dead idea. Henry James did NOT continue to make his work better as he revised it over the years. It's pleasent to think that he must have, since he's the great artist, after all, but the fact is that he didn't. Here's a chance to read The Turn of the Screw as it originally appeared--as James originally wrote it. Take a look through Beidler's comparison of the first edition to later ones--you will see that, as he revised it, he made it less clear as a piece of writing and less logical as a narrative. He should have left it alone.

Literary horror at its finest.
By Esmund Kerr
This one is tough to review without simply restating the plot or giving away spoilers.

The language can be a little difficult at times, sometimes a little choppy, other times it's written beautifully. Don't expect Henry James to blatantly tell you what's going on. In this piece of literature, the reader must be vigilant and intuitive and not rely on the author's narrative to tell you what the characters are feeling or how they develop. This book is definitely for people who can figure it out themselves, which is exactly what the author intended. This book is brilliant as there is no right or wrong interpretation, yet still tells a chilling story.

Stephen King claims this as one of his favorite scary stories, so if you love horror, and literature, and love to think for yourself, this book is great and one of the best I've ever read.
