The Last Olypmian

The Last Olympians was one of the best books i have ever read, the storyline was perfect I felt as if I was in the book but no one could see me or hear me but I could hear everything. At school I could not even put the book down. The way Rick Riordan wrote the book i felt as if I knew the charectars my whole life. The book also generated feeling I cried at the sad parts gasped at the surprising parts and laughed at the funny parts wherever the book's feeling went my feeling went with it. I loved the book so much I even wished I could be an amazing half-blood. I got this book for my birthday but I opened it before and the whole entire week I was itching to read it. I even told my friend to read it and she loves the series as much as I do. Personally I think Riordan should write another book. This was the biggest book of them all I never think I have ever read another interesting series. Rick Riordan makes sure everyone can relate to it and he thinks about the audience alot that is the most improtant thing an author can do. I have so much more to say but I can not. I hope you all enjoy the book!Thank you.

A worthy ending to a wonderful series...

I must admit, when I first picked up the lightning theif in preperations for my vacation last summer, it was with a thought that I might be able to use it as a excuse to not have to take driving shifts as we drove steadily eastward to yellowstone. My family knows that if I am really in a book, nothing can pull me away from it.

And so, as I desperately waited for my classes to get out, having bought The Last Olympian early that moment the doors opened at a local borders. I couldnt wait to start reading, having finished rereading book four during my lunch hour.

And I was not disappointed. Riordan has a wonderful sense of humor with a snarky edge to it. Though I usually do not enjoy books written in first person, because most authors dont get just how dangerous writing first person can be, Rick has shown a nack for choosing his words carefully, showing up a world in vivid detail, and emotional clarity. The Last Olympian is a wonderful ending to a series that had much promise, and never broke it.

To those who might be afraid I will spoil anything, I wont. I will only say this; Many twists and turns await you. In the final book of the Percy Jackson series, Rick Riordan has woven a tale, pulling all the threads together into a tapestry, with everything he had done before coming together in a epic, emotional ending... a ending that stirred my emotions in a way only one other writer, and concluding book had done, and that was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling.

While their story telling and writing styles are vastly different, what they share is a thirst for a good story, red herrings to throw you off, and a ending that you couldnt fully see coming, but cant help but be moved by in the end.

I am saddened that this story has drawn to a end, but all good stories must reach their conclusions, otherwise they stop being good.

But we can hope for Rick Riordan, for I have no doubt his gift from weaving a good story has not come to a close. I will continue to look forward to his future books.

A fun read for kids and classical students!

As a student of history with a love (and a minor!) in classics, and little kid at heart I loved this series of books, culminating in The Last Olympian--maybe the best in the series. The obvious comparison is to Harry Potter, but these books are really something different. They're a little lighter, and a little more fanciful, and just more 'colorful.' They are shorter and and just more fun with less dark overtones (imo.)

This last story brings about a conclusion to the whole saga, with one battle after another, answers all your question and even gives our heroes the accolades they richly deserve. It seems its the last one in the series and thats a little sad.

About the Author

Sue Titus Reid is Professor and Director of the Undergraduate Program in the Askew School of Public Administration and Policy at Florida State University. An accomplished scholar in both law and the social sciences, she contributed a chapter to the Encyclopedia of Crime and Justice and has published scholarly articles in both law and sociology. Dr. Reid has taught law students, graduate students, and undergraduate students at schools across the country. She received a university teaching award at FSU in 2000 and has been a fellow of the American Society of Criminology since 1982.

I have found this text to be a thorough exposition of topics within the stated subject matter. There was an obvious bias in the writing which came through at times, but for the most part a very scholarly work. The glossary was the only thing I found lacking in my use of this text.

I would highly recommend this to any professor looking for a text.

Jehanne Dubrow is the author of three poetry collections, most recently Stateside (TriQuarterly, 2010). Her work has appeared in The New Republic, Poetry, Ploughshares, The New England Review, and Prairie Schooner. She is an assistant professor of creative writing and literature at Washington College, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Home Front: A Different Kind of War Poetry

Many excellent poetry books deal with war from the point of view of the participants, but rarely does one find an examination of the life of the military spouse left behind during deployment. Stateside by Jehanne Dubrow is a gripping, thoughtful, and unsparing portrait of the author's responses to separation, anxiety, stress, longing, and the often prickly friction of reunion.

The book has three sections, which are roughly divided into before, during, and after the deployment. In the first section, Dubrow catalogues the fears, dreams, and preparations before her husband's departure. In the nightmarish sonnet "Against War Movies" she runs through all the war movies she has seen, imagining that she sees her husband in every character who is killed: "Each movie is a training exercise, / a scenario for how my husband dies." In the second section, Dubrow uses The Odyssey as a lens for viewing her life while her husband is gone, but this Penelope diets, gets a new haircut, fends off passes from divorcés, walks the dog Argos, takes Telemachus to the mall. Both of the first two sections are highly effective, but my favorite is the third section, which faces up unblinkingly to the difficulties of re-entry after a long absence, each spouse newly awkward around the other.

The feelings are both raw and nuanced in these poems, and Dubrow's technical mastery of the wide variety of forms--blank verse, rhymed quatrains, triplets, couplets, sonnets, nonce forms--acts as a sort of protective gear for handling potentially explosive emotions. Her approach to form is flexible, often using loose rhythms and slant rhymes. Thought and feeling do not cancel each other out in the poems, but pull against each other with a tension that also creates a bridge

Review from a Military Spouse

I read this book from the perspective of a military spouse who has experienced deployment. I could not put the book down -- I had to stay up to read it all in one sitting. The poems resonated deeply with me. Dubrow expresses beautifully and accurately the churn of emotions that a spouse experiences, from the time that one receives the news of the impending separation and the preparation that goes along with it, to the realities of life during the deployment and the anxiety that goes along with it, to the re-adjustment of a husband and wife learning to live together again. The poems skillfully reflect how deployment changes our perspective on daily routines and the coping mechanisms that we develop to get through it. Dubrow also ties her emotions to the experiences of so many women throughout history. Her poems serve as a reminder that war, and the families that are left behind, is a phenomenon that been going on for hundreds of years. Although the world, and wars themselves, have changed significantly, the emotional struggles of the family members who remain "stateside" have not changed all that much.

I very much enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it. It will be on my recommendation list for any family that is preparing for deployment, has experienced deployment, or anyone who wants to understand what it is like for those of us who love and support those who serve on the frontlines in our military.

Singing my life with [her] words

Jehanne Dubrow held a contest/giveaway on her blog recently and I won a copy of her book of poetry entitled Stateside. Sadly the package did not arrive with a giant sized box of Kleenex which I highly recommend you purchase before sitting down with this book.
I admit that I have always had an intense respect for Jehanne. She is a faculty member at Washington College, which I find very inspirational, since I still think I want to go tenure-track. So far, she's the only milspouse I've met that has managed to swing my dream job. That makes her tough as nails in my book.
I haven't read every word yet. I think it is too weighty for me to digest in one sitting. I found that each selection I read as I flipped through the book brought me back to some moment of my marriage. Reading felt so personal, like she was at once essentially "strumming my pain with [her] fingers" and at the same time I was voyeuristically watching her lay bare the very essence of herself in a way that I do not have the courage to do.
I found her comparisons to Penelope from the Odyssey incredibly clever, providing a familiar place for people who don't live this life an easy entry point into our world. And, as someone who has read the Iliad and the Odyssey in Latin for my Latin classes in high school, I found it refreshing to see these stories humanized and put into the perspective of the modern world.

A must read...Love this series

I have been anticipating this book for a month. There was not one ounce of disappointment either. Sandi hit it out of the park with this one. What a beautiful story and told so well. They really are each other's Lobster. This book will leave you with every emotion; laughing, angry, crying and moat of all loving. If you haven't read the other two books, read them! Your a great story teller Sandi. Can't wait for Ransom next

Well, I guess this is how it's gonna be; each book just as fab as the one before it! Harley's Achilles revolves around the lives of Harley Payne and his bodyguard, Achilles Castellanos. By the end of the last book, Jinxed, we were left knowing that there was something bound to happen between the two of them.
Harley always seemed a bit lost in the first two books. His character is childlike and more vulnerable than the rest of the band, considering he's in his early thirties. He's incredibly loyal, giving, devilish, sexy and lovable, but he doesn't see this about himself. Harley not only suffers from the physical loss of his brother, but the psychological loss at the hands of his parents. It's truly heartbreaking as he comes to terms of being ignored; not being seen. You feel his cry for attention.
Luckily for Harley, he has a Greek God to help him find his way. Enter Achilles. He's not only ex military who's hot as all hell, smart, strong and bossy, he's as lovable as Harley. I adored his family in Greece. They accept Achilles as he is and treat Harley as a real family should. Achilles has his own demons that he needs to come to terms with. It was a beautiful thing to see how in helping Harley, he also helps himself.
This book was filled with plenty of man love, I mean c'mon, Achilles and Harley? Just the visual alone made me hope my blood pressure meds were working! Of course, the antics and funny banter between the band members had me laughing my head off! I've mentioned this about the second book, but it's funny how Gareth, the youngest of all the guys, is still the voice of reason, lol. Most of all, you can't help but get caught up in the love between every one of them. They are all brothers and that in itself, made me realize that Harley never truly was alone. Sandrine's attention to detail, especially describing the beauty of Greece, and the passion she gives to each of her characters, made this an incredible 5 lobster claw read for me.

I love this author and I had high hopes for this ...

I love this author and I had high hopes for this book. It just didn't seem like she had enough of a story to pull it all together. There is no resolution, good or bad, with the original conflict of Harley's parents. The addition of the conflict of someone trying to harm Achilles didn't vibe with the history of the band. I'm glad I read it and I can't wait for Ransom's book but it is not nearly as good as Gareth or Jinx's books.

About the Author
Archer Martin specializes in the study of Roman pottery and related socio-economic questions. He studied at Vanderbilt University and the Universität Regensburg in Bavaria, before doing his graduate studies in classical archaeology at the Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza” and the Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene. He has taught at the Universities of Fribourg, Trento and Suor Orsola Benincasa (Naples) and served as the Andrew W. Mellon Professor-in-Charge of the School of Classical Studies at the American Academy in Rome. He also founded and directs the Howard Comfort FAAR ’29 Summer School in Roman Pottery at the AAR. He has worked on many archaeological projects in Italy (in particular at Rome, Ostia and Pompeii, as well as in Tuscany, Umbria and Abruzzo), Greece (Olympia and Gortyna), Turkey (Ephesos) and Egypt (Schedia in the western Delta near Alexandria). He is the treasurer of the Rei Cretariae Romanae Fautores, the leading association for the promotion of Roman pottery studies. David Soren is the Regents Professor of Anthropology and Classics and Adjunct Regents Professor of Art History at the University of Arizona. He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College in Greek and Roman Studies, his M.A. from Harvard in Fine Arts and his Ph.D. from Harvard in Classical Archaeology. He is a Fellow of Great Britain’s Royal Institute of International Affairs and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He has published 10 books and more than 100 articles on archaeology, art history, film, vaudeville and dance and has directed excavations in Tunisia, Portugal, Cyprus and Italy. He has won the Ciné Golden Eagle Award for documentary filmmaking and has worked extensively as a producer, director, screenwriter and consultant for NBC, PBS, A & E, BBC, RAI 1 (Italy), Discovery, National Geographic and the Learning Channel. For his contributions to Italian archaeology, he has been named an honorary Italian citizen.

A Straight Forward Read

I'm reading this text for a stylistics course, and I think it is very direct in its description of different methodologies and practices. I may be a biased though as I've already completed sociolinguistics course work, and stylistics and sociolinguistics have similar practices and theoretical perspectives.

I am using this in a graduate linguistics class. The book was sent in a timely manner and arrived in excellent condition. An excellent text on analyzing narratives for linguistic style and discourse.

An indepth review of the Five Tibetans and the chakra stimulating benefits fo this moving meditation technique. Very good information and helpful instruction for those embarking on a journey of rejuvination and illumination. I bought this for both my daughters.

As good a guide to the 5 Tibetans as you are likely to find

This particular introduction to "The 5 Tibetan Rites" distinguishes itself from previous efforts. "T5T" provides the new trainee with a structured, progressive program that allows stiff, weak, or sedentary readers who might struggle with some of the more difficult Rites to get the full benefits of the program right from the start. And eventually following the "T5T" progressions will build strength and limberness that allow the reader to complete the traditional versions of the Rites without strain or discomfort. So the book is a real boon to a lot of potential 5 Rites practitioners.

The book is beautifully photographed, and the program is nicely conceived and designed. I was especially impressed by the breakdown and scaling of progressions for the 2nd Rite (the Leg Lift), which can be problematic for people with weak abs or bad backs. The progressions for 4th Rite (the "Table") which makes some severe demands on the shoulder girdle also display a lot of insight and thought.

I only give the book 4 stars out of 5 because of the nature of the 5 Rites themselves. The 5 Tibetans are very elementary and basic exercises, and by no means as comprehensive and all embracing in their effects as their enthusiasts would have you believe. Most people will soon grow bored with such a simple routine and will need to find ways to add variety and sophistication to their health and vitality practices. That's not to say you shouldn't learn them and do them if they appeal to you; most trainees will derive good benefits from them. If 10 minutes is all you really have for your health, by all means do them.

Good book, great value for a trade paperback. If Witt writes another book in this vein, I'll certainly be interested in it.

This book is a cut above the others on the Five Tibetans simply because it places the practice of the exercises within the reach of people of all ages and levels of fitness. Ms Witt has consulted with health and exercise experts to ensure that anyone wishing to learn these wonderful rites can do so safely. There is an emphasis on breathing correctly and developing core stability, and on preparation for learning the exercises so that your muscles are ready and able to do the rites correctly. There are variations on each rite which will not only guide you safely from beginner to intermediate to advanced - but will also provide alternative ways of doing each exercise should you suffer from an injury - or just find the advanced version too difficult to do.

The book is also beautifully presented and very well laid out. Ms Witt explains both the exercises and the philosophy behind T5T thoroughly and entertainingly. There is no better book to help you begin the path toward T5T.

In this broad-ranging book John Edwards looks at the issues raised by language difference, and considers the effects of multilingualism on the individual speaker as well as on society. By examining the social life of language rather than theories of language, John Edwards studies the interaction of language with nationalism, identity, history, politics and education. He illustrates his arguments with a range of examples, from recent attempts to revive and preserve languages such as Irish and Basque to the argument over French and English in Canada and the 'US English' campaign. He also scrutinizes the linguistic myopia of those who would seek to elevate one language over another and surveys the role that schools play in the formation of cultural and linguistic identity.

About the Author
John was born in London and has spent much of his life working there until his job at the Department of Health was relocated to Leeds. He spent the last eight years of his working life in Leeds. He has written numerous short stories and three novels and had two short novels published. He currently edits a journal for the American Stamp Club of Great Britain. He belongs to a local writing group based in Pontefract. He has two grown-up daughters - one lives in Leeds the other in Spain.

A friendly introduction to the field

John Edwards' MULTILINGUALISM is an introduction to the phenomenon of 5,000 languages over just a few tens of countries. The necessity to learn multiple languages to function in one's society is, in fact, nearly universal, and Edwards presents the polemic that ensues. The book is written in a very accessible tone and assumes little formal knowledge of linguistics.

Edwards begins by explaining the gradual change of a single language into a whole family of multually unintelligible tongues, the process that gives us multiple languages. He then explains how bilingualism works, how one learns a second language whether as a child or as an adult learner. Code-switching, borrowing, and interference are some important themes here.

The meat of the book is how multiple languages interact not just in the brain of the individual, but among the greater society. Language spread and, closely related, language decline is depressingly reported, while the difficulties of language revival are presented. For Edwards, multilingualism is not just the co-existence of multiple languages within a given society, but even the presence of multiple forms of speech. Very fascinating is his description of prescriptivism, which in seeking to uphold "pure" language asserts that other variants are necessarily impure. And even within a single-language group, men may speak strikingly different than women, as among the Gros Ventre of Montana where men say "jatsa" for bread while women say "kjatsa".

Edwards' MULTILINGUALISM is probably the single best introduction to the topic. However, having been published in 1994, some of its contemporary examples are dated. Bernard Spolsky's LANGUAGE POLICY (Cambridge University Press, 2004) illustrates the matter with some rather more timely issues. Also, Jean Aitchinson's LANGUAGE CHANGE: Progress or Decay is a more profound look the matter than Edwards, and at a similar gentle pace.

Excellent Daily Lenten Reader

I was looking for daily reading for my lenten journey and purchased this in the Kindle version: I Have Heard The Cries Of My People - The Exodus for Lent Daily Devotions. The readings are explainations of readings in the Book of Exodus. The chapter and verses for the day are noted at the beginning of each day, but you have to have a bible to read the actual verses if you want that. The reading was enough for me. I found it an excellent morning prayer book for lent. I also purchased another Kindle lenten readings and found the combination just right for me. I would highly recommend this and I think you could use this any time of the year.
