Not worth the money

As a food microbiologist, I have owned several textbooks on the topic. And this book is a mess. It is difficult to read...I often found myself having to go over the same paragraph a couple times to figure out exactly what the authors were trying to say. Sentences and paragraphs don't flow and parts of it seem like they were never edited. It was clearly written by two different people, which only adds to the lack of continuity. But the thing that bothered me most about the book was that the authors would often use abbreviations without previously stating in the text what they stand for. This may seem trivial, but I shouldn't have to be flipping to the back of the book every few pages to verify what an abbreviation means. I would advise against using this book as your food micro reference. There are better textbooks available.

An Introduction to Nineteenth-Century Art (for Kindle)

This is a wonderful book, so much more comprehensive than the text book my professor recommended for the class. I decided to try a brand new textbook just out by Michelle Facos because the textbook used for this course by many universities is very expensive and I read reviews by students who were not happy with it because of its political point of view and extremely complicated writing. Facos' book covers much more of Western art history by including northern European countries such as Sweden. There are many photographs of paintings and sculptures. It is written in an interesting and easy to read style, yet with all the citations and glossary. First of all, the Art History hard cover books are big and heavy. They are also extremely expensive. I wanted to save carrying such a heavy book and decided from then on I was going to look for any book on Kindle that I could substitute for any of my university courses. The material in all of the text books for the same level course will be basically the same, so you can usually substitute any textbook for another one. I saved money, space and carrying heavy loads, by going Kindle.

One gets a grasp of the art of this time period

As I'm learning, the 19th century in art is quite a conglomeration of schools of thoughts and styles. It is also the time where more individuals had disposable income to buy art and more leisure time to view art in museums. The author includes sufficient photos of the art discussed, and discusses the artists and pieces in sufficient detail, that I've gotten a much better sense of trends during that time period.

As usual, too Eurocentric, but al least there are some East European artists.

I suppose this is a textbook but didn't pay much attention to that. This is the best survey of 19th century art I have read. It is still highly Eurocentric (does include US artists) but is more inclusive than usual in that it includes some fine Scandinavian and East European artists whose work is too often not covered, In my view, Russian art in the 1800s was nearly as good as the French. Having no coverage of the art from the rest of the world is lamentable, but normal in this genre of books. That said, this is a good one, as far as it goes.

The book is particularly good in covering the post-Impressionists and the emergence of photography as an element of art.

This new entry in the Longman Library of World Biography series offers an intimate and provocative account of the Manchu emperor Qianlong (1711-1799), one of the world's great empire-builders, who helped build the foundation of the modern Chinese nation. During the 64 years of Qianlong's rule, China's population more than doubled, its territory increased by one-third, its cities flourished, and its manufactures - tea, silk, porcelain - were principal items of international commerce. Based on original Chinese and Manchu-language sources, and drawing on the latest scholarship, this is the biography of the man who, in presiding over imperial China's last golden epoch, created the geographic and demographic framework of modern China. This accessible account describes the personal struggles and public drama surrounding one of the major political figures of the early modern age, with special consideration given to the emperor's efforts to rise above ethnic divisions and to encompass the political and religious traditions of Han Chinese, Mongols, Tibetans, Turks, and other peoples of his realm. In addition to becoming familiar with one of the most remarkable figures in world history, readers will find that learning about Emperor Qianlong will add greatly to their appreciation of China's place in the world of the eighteenth century and will deepen their understanding of China's place in the world today.

About the Author

Mark C. Elliott is the Mark Schwartz Professor of Chinese and Inner Asian History in the Department of East Asian Langauges and Civilizations at Harvard University. Professor Elliott's interest in East Asia began at Yale, where he earned his BA (History, 1981) and MA (East Asian Studies, 1983). After several years of study and archival research in Taiwan, the PRC, and Japan, he earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1993, specializing in the history of the last imperial dynasty, the Qing. A leading figure in what is sometimes called the "New Qing History," he is among the very few historians in the United States trained in the use of Manchu-language sources, upon which his first book, The Manchu Way: The Eight Banners and Ethnicity in Late Imperial China (Stanford, 2001) is largely based. He is currently at work on a new book examining the connections between the Manchu empire and modern China.

Concise and entertaining, excellent resource for teachers

This highly entertaining and compact book is by far the best overview on Qing, China for teaching. Elliott is masterful in taking a seemingly dull topic (I am typically not a big fan of late imperial China) and bringing it to life in a non-intimidating way. This book uses the backdrop of a biography of the Qianlong emperor to map out everything you need to know about the 18th century (Qianlong reigned over sixty years), including summarizing for a general audience the major debates in the field. There are no characters in this book and explains for the layperson on how to pronounce many of the Chinese names used. The back has an annotated bibliography for further reading. (Good for qualifying exam preparation!)

Everything from ritual life, to population growth and domestic politics, to trade, to the tribute system and Qing China in the world, and the British, is discussed in here, along with lots of little stories (good for attention-grabbing in lecture) and exciting new research in the field. For example, there's detailed discussion of the emperor's extensive imperial tours in China, the relationship with his wives, Qing consolidation of borders and border conflicts (including Tibet and Xinjiang), and discussion of Qianlong's obsession in preserving Manchu ways of life (clothing, language, hunting, martial skills, etc). There's also a great map for teaching Qing China borders (not that different from the current Chinese borders, minus Mongolia and Taiwan) with a map of the US overlaying it. Visually, one can see that the two countries are approximately the same size. Fascinating stuff to use for lecture!

A Good Introduction

This book is at best a good introduction to the Qianlong emperor's reign. Whole books have been written about several aspects of the reign. The author himself mentions Perdue's book on the Qing conquest of central Asia (which I've bought but not had time to read). Alan Peyrifitte has written _ The Immobile Empire _ about the MacCartney mission (which I did read and heartily recommend). This book includes many paintings by Catiglione who's another topic in his own right. So, as I said, it's at best a good introduction to the period. But it does do that very well and even includes very topical information.
By far the most moving aspect of the book was the portrayal of the emperor's personal life, such as his lifelong grief over the death of his first wife, or his doting on his last daughter. It shows yet again that these people were indeed people with loves and losses of their own.

A very good book, fleshed out with loads of interesting detail and broad context which helps to put things in perspective, especially against major events in western history. I also like the fact that it is well organized, so it can serve as a quick reference book as well as a relaxing and engaging read. Not a mean feat for what some may consider to be a dry subject.

About the Author
Lord Broers is President of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Chairman of the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee. He spent nineteen years in the research and development laboratories of IBM in the USA and then twenty years at Cambridge University as Professor of Electrical Engineering, Master of Churchill College, Head of the Engineering Department, and Vice-Chancellor. In his research at Cambridge and at IBM, he pioneered the use of electron beams to write the patterns for silicon chips.
